Recently we partnered with a design studio based in Germany that came to us with a clear, specific goal: turn their 2D artwork concept into a physical aluminum relief panel. They had a handful of straightforward, practical questions about how aluminum 3D printing would work for their piece—so we broke everything down for them, no jargon, no fluff.
At a glance
- Panel size: 70 × 50 cm
- Material: Aluminum
- Finish goal: Smooth matte base + mirror-polished raised sculptural elements
- Delivery destination: Germany
Feasibility & production plan
First up: the big feasibility question.
Our technical team ran a full review of their design and confirmed right away: a 70×50 cm aluminum 3D printed relief panel is totally doable. No red flags, no major design tweaks needed.
In other words, we can customize the sculptural art relief wall panel for the client via aluminum 3D printing.
One of their first follow-up questions was whether we could print the whole thing as a single piece, or if it would need to be printed in sections and assembled.
Here’s the honest answer: If this were plastic 3D printing, we could absolutely print this as one single piece, no problem. But with aluminum—especially when you need two completely different surface finishes on one panel—printing it all in one go just doesn’t deliver that clean, premium end result.
Our recommended approach? Print the raised sculptural elements separately, polish each one to a perfect mirror finish individually, then permanently bond them to the matte base panel.
One thing we made very clear up front: even though the parts are printed separately, the final assembled piece is completely solid, and there are no visible seams at all. You’d never be able to tell it wasn’t printed as one single unit.
Surface finish results
They also wanted to know if we could actually pull off that dual finish: smooth matte background with highly polished, mirror-like raised details.
Short answer: 100% yes. That’s exactly why we recommended the split production method in the first place. By finishing the base and the raised elements completely separately, we get a perfectly even matte finish on the background and a flawless mirror polish on the sculpted parts—no bleed between finishes, no messy edges, no compromises.
Pricing & lead time
On pricing: we don’t give out exact final numbers until we lock in all the 3D model details. Custom 3D printing costs shift based on things like wall thickness, detail density, and finish requirements, so we prefer to quote accurately rather than throw out a rough number that might change later.
That said, we work with a lot of clients all across Germany, so we’re able to keep pricing very competitive for this type of custom work.
For production lead time? We estimated 8 days from the moment the final 3D model is approved and signed off.
Shipping to Germany
For delivery to Germany, we quoted an estimated $270 USD, with a delivery window of 7–12 business days after dispatch. Pretty standard for a panel in that size.
Bonus: 3D modeling support
One extra perk we threw in: since their design was relatively simple based on the reference images they sent, we offered to handle all the 3D modeling work for them. That takes that task off their plate, and it speeds up the whole process too—since we build the model to our exact print specs from the start.
Final thoughts
What we liked about this project is that it’s a good reminder that 3D printing doesn’t always mean “one single piece.” A lot of people assume that’s the default, but sometimes splitting the print into parts gives you a way better final product.
We don’t force every project into a one-size-fits-all process. We adjust our method to match what the client actually wants to achieve—even if that means taking a slightly less straightforward route to get a better result.
